Beautiful space that works for real people

Imber Design is a Portland interior design studio where fine art sensibility and commercial design expertise meet.

Founded by Maddy Mackin Freeman, we partner with Pacific Northwest businesses to create workplaces, retail environments, medical offices, and hospitality spaces that are as considered as they are beautiful.

We believe thoughtfully designed spaces change how people work, gather, and heal, and that kindness is a design value, not a nice-to-have. Working closely with architects, commercial real estate brokers, and the people who'll actually use the space, we take projects from test fit and space planning through tenant improvements and final walkthrough.

Pragmatism and beauty are partners here. Every project has constraints: a budget, a timeline, a weird column right where you wanted the conference room. We thrive on them, because that's where the best decisions get made.

One partner, sketch to walkthrough

Every Imber project is led by me, start to finish. The person picking your material palette is the same person on the call with your electrician and following up your blinds vendor. No bait-and-switch, no handing you off to a team you didn't hire. Just one accountable partner who has it handled.

What we do

INTERIOR DESIGN

From concept through completion, we create cohesive interiors that balance beauty with function: spaces people genuinely want to spend time in.

SPACE PLANNING & TEST FIT

We figure out how you really use space, then build layouts that make every square foot earn its keep. A thoughtful test fit is the most important (and least glamorous) part of your project. It's what keeps chaos out of construction.

DESIGN MANAGEMENT

Your designer by your side from start to finish, coordinating vendors, timelines, and the hundreds of small decisions in between. We keep things on track and on budget while you get back to running your business.

INTERIOR BRANDING

Your space should tell your story. We translate what your company values into materials, color, and moments that feel authentic to the people who work there and the clients who visit.

FURNITURE SELECTION

We source and specify furniture that balances looks, durability, and budget, with a preference for local makers and WMBE vendors wherever we can.

Good design is local

Our work is built here, by people we know. We prioritize Pacific Northwest makers and underrepresented fabricators, specify low-impact materials, offer reduced rates for nonprofits, and put 1% of revenue toward carbon removal through Stripe Climate. Imber Design is WBE/ESB certified through Oregon's COBID program.

"From day one, communication was exceptional. She kept us informed at every step, anticipated questions before they came up, and made what could have been an overwhelming office buildout feel organized and manageable. What impressed me most was that she went far beyond just 'design' — she actively helped manage key project components. She truly operated as a partner in the entire buildout, not just a designer."
